The Growing Threat to Food Security

The Cold Chain Federation (CCF) has raised alarms about the UK's food supply, warning that complacency among ministers could lead to a major crisis. With over a third of food imports relying on just four ports, the vulnerability of the supply chain is evident, especially in light of potential international conflicts and climate-related disruptions.

Phil Pluck, CEO of CCF, emphasizes that the risks have never been greater. Key factors threatening food security include:

• Cyber attacks on logistics systems
• Extreme weather events disrupting cold storage facilities

The reliance on cold storage for essential items like meat, dairy, and even medicines makes the situation even more precarious. As the UK has not faced significant challenges to its food system since World War II, the call for immediate government action is more pressing than ever.
