Uber Launches 500 Data-Collecting Vehicles This Year

Uber's Ambitious Data Collection Plan

Uber has unveiled a prototype vehicle designed to collect real-world driving data for its autonomous vehicle partners, including industry leaders like Waymo and Avride. This initiative marks a significant milestone for Uber, as it is the first vehicle assembled by the company since selling its autonomous division to Aurora in 2020. The Hyundai Ioniq 5, equipped with an extensive array of sensors, will be deployed globally to gather high-fidelity data crucial for the development of robotaxis.

The fleet of 500 vehicles is expected to collect an impressive 2 million miles of data each month. Each Ioniq 5 is outfitted with:

  • 14 cameras
  • 8 solid-state lidar sensors
  • 9 radars
This data will be processed through Nvidia’s advanced autonomous vehicle computer, enabling Uber to create a diverse dataset tailored for training self-driving software. With a head start from previous data collection efforts, Uber aims to provide its partners with a comprehensive, time-synchronized view of driving environments, enhancing the capabilities of autonomous technologies.
